BATTS League Playing Format

Fully Explained BATTS League Playing Format

  • BATTS League will use the Olympic teams format, where each team can assign their players to a letter A, B, or C, and the other team can assign their players to X, Y, and Z. A coin toss will be used to determine which team can pick the set ABC or the set XYZ.
  • Each match will be a best of three sets, first to eleven to win one set, win by two.
  • In the first set of a single match, for every 200 points of difference in USATT tournament rating, the higher rated player will give the lower rated player 2 points, and the maximum handicap is 8 points in the event of an unrated player.
  • In the first set of a doubles match, for every 200 points of difference in combined USATT tournament rating, the higher rated player pair will give the lower rated player pair 1 point, and the maximum handicap is 6 points.
  • Additionally, a Golden Game will be played after the conclusion of the Olympic format. The team that is leading will get a head start based on the difference of the number of sets won. The losing team must first call out their first player’s name, and then the leading team calls out a player’s name to face that player. This will continue in a snake format to determine both the order of play and the opponent each player will face. If a team starts up a certain amount, the first players will play the amount of points needed to reach a total of four. Each player will alternate two serves for each player, playing a total of four points before switching to the next pair of players. Whichever team reaches 21 total points first will win the Golden Game.  If the game is tied at 20-20, one single point will be played to determine the winner.

Example:

Team Lynbrook                                                                                    Team Quarry Lane

   A               Justin                                  vs                                         X        Isabella

B                 Om                                   vs                                          Y        Alex

         (A/B and C) Om + John                   vs                          X/Y and Z  Alex + Prad

C             John                                        vs                                           Z        Prad

A             Justin                                      vs                                           Y        Alex

Golden Game

At the conclusion of the Olympic format, Team Lynbrook is leading 8-7 over Team Quarry Lane. Lynbrook will start the Golden Game with a 1-0 head start. Lynbrook wins 21-20.

Regular Season

Format will be subject to change if necessary.

  • All teams will be split into two round robin groups, in a snake format, based on seeding rating of the team, which is calculated from the team’s top 3 players combined rating at the beginning of the season.
  • Matches will be held roughly once a month, and in one season there will be around four match days, 3 days for the group stage, and 1 day for the playoffs. We will try our best to work around major tournaments that may have conflicting times.

Playoff

  • The top two teams from each group will advance to the playoffs. Group 1’s winner will play Group 2’s second place, and Group 2’s winner will play Group 1’s second place in the semifinal. The winners will meet in the final, while the losers will play a 3rd/4th place match.
  • The remaining teams will play another team that has the same ranking in the other group. For example, the 3rd place of Group 1 will play the 3rd place of Group 2. This will determine the overall standings at the conclusion of the season.
